#NYFW Concept Korea x A Stylish Snowman

February 16, 2014

As London Fashion Week surges forward, I’m chugging green tea and wrapping up the last of my New York Fashion Week coverage. It was an inspiring season, and despite the snow mounds and precipitation, I got the feeling that the fashion crowd were in good spirits. Maybe it was the technicolor outerwear, or the random snowman someone built outside Lincoln Center on the final day of shows?

Concept Korea is one of my favorite shows, combining Korea’s up and coming talent in one epic showcase of craftsmanship and creativity. This season the collections included KAAL E. Sukatae, Choi Boko, Beyond Closet by Tae Yong, and Big Park.

The show opened with a modern dance performance, and then KAAL E. Suktae’s 90s-inspired collection, featuring epic wide-brimmed hats reminiscent of traditional Korean gat. Choi Boko’s collection was inspired by the designer’s memory of a woman in a white coat, that morphed each time he recollected it over the years. Beyond Closet was inspired by the designer’s time in the Korean military, featuring soldiers “off duty” in casual, but tailored ensembles. Finally, Big Park presented a rather aggressive, highly stylized collection of bold high-contrast colors and strong silhouettes, accented with hip hop inspired styling.

Check out my picks from each collection below.

After the show, I had a glass of bubbly in the lobby and jotted down some thoughts. One of my thoughts? “This single flute of champagne must have gold flecks floating around in it to cost $17.” Cheers, violets!
