10 Ways to Have an Awesome Halloween

October 30, 2013

It’s midnight, which means… it’s HALLOWEEN!

You no doubt have 24 hours of sheer terror, yummy candy, and dance parties ahead of you, so let’s jump right into it. Here are 10 seasonally-tuned ways to have a ton of fun this Halloween, from a festive day of work to a night out on the town.

1. It’s never too late to decorate. Whether it’s a dollar store “Happy Halloween” banner on the wall or some creepy skeletons guarding your night stand, it’s easy to add some excitement to your abode or office.

2. Light some incense and let it fill your space with a rich, autumnal aroma as you go about your day. Curl up with a scary book by the window and watch the leaves fall.

3. Tune in to Pandora‘s “Halloween Party” station as you prepare your costume—or browse this list of spooky tunes.

4. Got a few hours? DIY a costume! Even if you already bought one, you have nothing to lose. Challenge yourself to come up with something even more exciting. You never know… you might shock yourself. (heh heh heh)

4. Round up your possee and descend upon a pumpkin patch. Promise, this only gets more fun as you age.

5. Bake seasonal treats like banana bread and pumpkin pie to enjoy with some cider or tea. Bonus points for sharing with the neighbors.

6. Watch Hocus Pocus, while you carve and paint pumpkins. Best movie ever! Some people even think it should be a Broadway musical! Not your thing? Pick a horror movie instead (just don’t slip with that pumpkin carving knife).

7. Read up on some real life spooky tales like these ghost stories from Romania or the infamous Isla de las Muñecas. Leave creepy voice mails on your friends’ phone re-telling these tales. Yes, be that friend.

8. Discover the origins of Halloween via the almighty Google, and wander through the many links you’ll find along the way, tracing you back to ancient civilizations and rituals, some of which will completely creep you out.

9. Grab your favorite vintage camera and hit the streets to document costumes and creative Halloween decor around your neighborhood. Who knows—a local news blog might even e-print your snaps!

10. Finally, follow an overdose of candy (or gluten-free baked goods shaped like ghosts, whichever you prefer) with a full night of dancing your face off. Like, right off. Wouldn’t that be scary?!

And of course, be safe, violets. No major injuries or arrests, ya hear?

Happy Hauntings!

Hocus Pocus really is the best! I’ve lined it up with some pretty Argento movies for my late-night sugar crash. :) Happy Halloween!
