Stars & Stripes! ★Happy 4th

July 4, 2013

Happy Independence Day to my American/America-dwelling readers! ★ How are you celebrating? Amusingly, I’ll be moving and shaking all night at a trans-global dance party held in a Bulgarian bar, but here in NYC we tend to keep it global all the time (even on July 4th).

Eastern Euro disco-bound or not, I’ll still be toasting to my beloved homeland and feeling grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given here. So much of my family and so many of my friends have served this country through service in the military, disaster relief programs, charity, and more. I want to make this kind of impact a point in my own life: to help those who call America their home, no matter where they’re from.

And that brings me to a relevant point to lay on the table on a day like today: America is a nation of all nations!

It’s been shaped by the immigrants and indigenous people who’ve fought to protect their traditions and legacies along the way. Whether our ancestors belong to the oldest Native American tribe or we were just swore in as citizens yesterday, we should all embrace one another as brothers and sisters.

…Okay, off the soap box! Be safe, have a blast, and don’t eat too much BBQ.

P.S. Flag image via Free People—they gave that beautiful thing away in a blog contest to some lucky duck.

P.P.S. If you never saw this fantastic mess of stars and stripes last year, please revisit.
