Apple picking & Cow Trains

October 19, 2011

I really wanted to check in today and report that I turned 27 yesterday—woah! When did that happen? Last time I checked I was turning 21 at F.I.T., waking up hungover in a dorm room full of deflated balloons in a yukata. Then suddenly I was turning 25, graduated, being serenaded by a room full of Eastern European hipsters with cake on my face, hiding in a DJ booth.

I’ve had amazing birthdays my entire life, and they only seem to get better each year. This one is no exception (though last year was tough to beat), and it started with a trip up the river…

Raffa and I met his mom at Grand Central and boarded the train to Beacon. We happened upon the local harvest festival and outdoor market across the street on the river dock, and couldn’t resist. Amazing food, local culture, live music, and general adorableness.

We came across one vendor selling handmade folk art and Dia de Los Muertos relics. I love these tiny scenes and I’m a sucker for Mexican folk art. This civil ceremony scene amused us the most, heh heh!

We headed back to mom’s house to meet up with some other friends and relax before continuing our little adventure. Look how green and beautiful it is!

After some hot coffee and photo ops we were off to Hurds Orchards for apple picking, hay rides and a very magical thing called the cow train. Meant for kids? Yes. Did we ride it anyway? Of course!

We rode in this thing repeatedly, and sometimes little kids didn’t want to let the big kids have the bigger seats. Poor Georgie!

That, my dears, was an amazing birthday.

I had two parties in the city following this excursion (you know me—I’d rather not stop celebrating), but this little trip to the Hudson Valley was the highlight of my month.

…and while I would love to post pics from those subsequent parties, I need to sleep! Two press previews tomorrow.

Man I really want to a good harvest festival now. I think we’re planning for one with a corn maze post-halloween…
