Sweet 70s Nostalgia & “All American”…?

September 14, 2010

My photog-credit debut! I covered Chris Benz for Refinery29 yesterday and my photos went up on the site (that’s a first for me), a playful & sexy ’70s inspired palette of florals, sheers, embroidery, and nostalgic silhouettes. Check out the review & slide show of images here. Below are some of the photos I shot at the presentation.

Also went to Matthew Ames today but felt the inspiration didn’t meet the actual end product in the middle. Ames typically puts clean, crisp stuff on the runway with a clear vision, and while this collection was beautiful, it was more inspired by a palette of global influences. Why do I care? Well, the designer went as far as reassuring in the program that “the influences and tradition are entirely and locally American”.

I guess that’s true in a metropolitan melting pot sense, but come on. Tribal jewelry, head wraps, raw silks dyed curry, turquoise, copper… We’re dealing with roots of a different origin, and that’s not something any designer should be so eager to deny.

Street strolling after the show, I was handed a copy of the YSL Manifesto.
