Brighton Beach & Summer Shopping

July 21, 2010

A proper beach day requires a balance of fast-fashion staples, hand-quilted rick-rack separates, and of course, some sand, sun and ice cold corona. During a recent trip to Brighton Beach with Raffa, I frolicked in the sand wearing an adorable (recently scavenged from a 23rd street thrift shop) handmade blue quilted skirt over my Michael Kors zebra suit. I loved the pop colors and how bright they were near the ocean.

A vivid yellow embroidered shawl (a gift from mom), a classic red table cloth, and leopard bed sheet blended to create the perfect spot for lounging in the sand.

The visual summary of my summer accessory shopping: From unexpected printed canvas bags to white leather belts and floral frames, I found myself unable to restrain from decking out in excess as the weather turned hotter. Blame it on my love of colorful, festive fashion as usual!

1. Woven canvas bag with kitschy Hindu mythology print by Blue-Q. Aside from falling in love with the print, it’s made with 95% post-consumer materials and a percentage of the sale support The Nature Conservancy (a conservation organization founded in 1951 that protects ecologically important land/water around the globe). Purchased at Reminiscence (50 West 23rd Street).

2.Vintage gold pendant. There are very few of my summer necklines this doesn’t compliment perfectly. Purchased at Reminiscence (50 West 23rd Street).

3. A full spectrum of coin scarves (five total) to assist in late night technicolor dance floor battles in the Burdel – purchased on Ebay.

4. Floral & white non-prescription frames – too sweet to pass by (I bought them along the way to Brighton Beach). Purchased from a street vendor on St. Mark’s Place.

5. Item #3 in action!

6. A silk floral scarf from the discount bin! Perfect around the neck or tied around an up-do. Also purchased at Reminiscence.

7. A white leather belt with metal square accents, topped with inset rhinestones. Just gaudy enough to be awesome. A shot of white like this can add full-on resort flavor to any casual outfit.  Also purchased at Reminiscence.

      Thanks Glendy!

The shawl is definitely one of the best items to have come into my possession this summer. ;)
